Meet the Naturopathic Doctor
-Dr. Shawna Hasel
Background
Dr. Shawna Hasel ND completed her Naturopathic Doctorate degree at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon in 2004. Now known as the National University of Natural Medicine, it is the oldest accredited naturopathic medical university in North America. She completed pre-medical studies and earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Pacific University while playing collegiate soccer with scholarship. During that time she also lived abroad in Ireland and traveled to the UK, Scotland, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and Morocco.
As a 5th generation Oregonian, she chose to return to The Dalles and the Gorge where she was born and raised. She has been providing her community with a wholistic healthcare perspective and quality natural, integrative solutions since 2005.
When not at the office, Dr. Hasel enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 young children. Her hobbies are diverse and include gardening, chicken ranching, hunting for wild free-range meat, mountain biking, windsurfing, and bird hunting her Small Munsterlander. Travel to her remote cabin outside Joesph, Oregon and her family’s cabin at Summer Lake are about as far away as she gets these days!
“It’s been a beautiful journey providing healthcare to my community for over 15 years. I’m grateful and honored that former classmates, teachers, and many friends and family have come to me to discover what Naturopathic medicine offers…”
My Guiding Principles:
My goal is not to simply alleviate your symptoms but to identify the root cause. All while recognizing the complexities and interconnectedness of the human mind, body and spirit.
Respect and Listening.
I respect and value your health history and insight, you have lived it! I will listen compassionately and take the time to hear your story.
Find the Underlying Cause.
I take a wholistic approach to healthcare, appreciating the interconnectedness. Symptoms are often signs that something deeper exists. Rather than simply masking or treating symptoms, we will work together to uncover the deeper imbalances.
The Doctor as Teacher.
Education and guidance is the foundation of my practice. I believe true change comes with knowledge you can implement- once we know and understand the cause.

Philosophy of Wellness:
Wellness is better described as a state of balance on every level (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual). Like nature, your body is constantly striving towards balance. But your internal “terrain” is bombarded on a daily basis by obstacles to health including stress, genetics, poor nutrition, environmental toxins, hormones, infections and more. Disease is essentially when obstacles are too many or too intense. Your body is not able to center itself and bring back to its optimum state. You then experience symptoms, which are essentially manifestations of this imbalance.
Over time, neglect of these symptoms may lead to a chronic state of imbalance or disease that takes time to reverse. Let’s remove those obstacles to health- whenever possible and start bringing the body back to balance! By seeing health and disease from this viewpoint, it becomes clear why it is essential to address the underlying imbalance (rather than just the symptoms) and to treat the whole person.
